Police rescue Jill and Zoe and subdue Ken Carlton
The CageEve Strong’s team finds Jill Richards and Zoe Hardy in the loft of Ken Carlton’s house, beginning a rescue that becomes a confrontation when Carlton returns. The discovery turns a fast-moving investigation into an immediate effort to protect the captives and prevent their abductor from escaping.
Finding the Captives
After identifying the delivery-van driver’s address, Eve, Bill Nicol and Paul Forrester hurry to the house. Inside, signs of captivity emerge in the spare bedroom: adult nappies and the same prison tunics worn by women the police had already found. A small bathroom nearby, with only a toilet and washbasin, a groove beneath its door and a window nailed shut and painted over, provides further evidence that the house has been arranged to confine someone.
On the landing, Eve spots a hooked metal pole and a loop attached to the loft hatch. She uses the pole to lower the hatch and ladder, then climbs into the loft, where a cage dominates the space. Jill is inside; Zoe lies unconscious beside it. Jill asks the officers to get medical help for Zoe, while Bill frees Zoe and then unties Jill. Eve calls for medics and backup, and also arranges for food to be brought. The rescue is not yet secure: Jill tells the team that Carlton has gone out to get something with which to punish Zoe, and says he threatened that they would learn what pain was. When cooler air enters the loft, she fears he has returned.
Carlton’s Return and the Hostage Standoff
Eve knows Ken Carlton may flee when he sees the open loft hatch, so she signals for the team to descend in sequence and moves quickly down the stairs. As Paul Forrester and Bill Nicol follow, the officers search the house. Eve checks the dining room, where the curtains are drawn despite the daylight. When she approaches them, Carlton bursts from the deep windowsill behind the fabric and knocks her to the floor.
Bill and Paul reach the room to find Carlton holding Eve and threatening her with a carving knife. He keeps them back while the team withdraws, then says he has found his captives and forces Eve to her feet. She confirms that the women have been found and tells him police and medics are on their way, but he orders her to walk. The rescue has become a hostage standoff: with Jill Richards and Zoe Hardy still in the house, Carlton attempts to use Eve to regain control and escape.
Breaking the Standoff
Carlton forces Eve Strong out of the dining room and through the kitchen toward the back door, where his black cab is waiting. She fears that if he gets her into it, he can take her beyond the reach of her team. Pretending to stumble, she uses the moment he grabs her to drive her head backward into his face. He drops the knife, and Bill Nicol and Paul Forrester rush in. Carlton grabs Eve by the throat, but Jill Richards reaches the room and strikes him with an object from the worktop. He falls and lies still.
Paul handcuffs Carlton and supports Jill, whose injured wrist makes the effort costly. The object she picked up proves to be a recently purchased blow lamp. Jill understands that Carlton had intended to use it against her and Zoe Hardy after threatening to teach them what pain was. His restraint of the captives has turned, in the rescue’s final moments, into a danger that Jill herself helps stop; the officers secure Carlton, and the intended attack on the two women is prevented.
The Pattern Behind the Rescue
The discovery of Jill Richards and Zoe Hardy belongs to a wider investigation into how the abductor intercepted women during ordinary journeys. Becky Allsopp disappeared after travelling from Newcastle Central Station through Sunderland and walking beyond the Stadium of Light’s CCTV coverage. Louise Usher’s routine was less fixed: after the gym, she might walk home, take a bus, or occasionally use a taxi. With no reports of shouting or screeching tyres, the investigators considered whether the women had been taken into a vehicle without attracting attention. The pattern made the means of pickup, rather than any single destination, central to their inquiry.
CCTV then showed Jill leaving a supermarket, walking past McDonald’s towards Roker Avenue, disappearing briefly from view, and reappearing at a bus stop outside the Salvation Army. After checking the timetable, she hailed a car that looked like a black cab but had no sign on its roof. Eve Strong recognized the significance: the police had warned people to hail only white cars displaying a taxi sign. The footage confirmed the investigators’ suspicion that an apparent taxi could be part of the abduction method. By the time the team reached Ken Carlton’s house, the rescue was therefore also the culmination of an inquiry that had traced a familiar form of transport into a concealed place of captivity.
